M obile development has become a passion of mine. I fell into the field in the early days, and discovered that I not only enjoyed writing Objective-C and then Swift (I already knew Java) but that experience that native development offers is far nicer to a user than most non-native options. I like tablets and phones, though am a little unsure on the phablet. Probably because I have child sized hands.

I am proud that I can develop for two different (major) platforms, and that I am aware of the differences in presentation and expected behaviour on each of those platforms. I also feel my much longer experience with backend, and API knowledge, is very helpful in creating a joined up solution. Very few mobile apps work in isolation these days.

L ifting heavy things has become an important part of my life. I used to climb but that kind of tailed off when I moved to the South East of the UK (my buddies are still in the North East). I then took up running. And did OK. But I basically bored myself with it :) After some time I realised I needed something else and boxing, Kettlebells, and latterly barbells and calisthenics filled a void.

I compete internationally in Long Cycle (Kettlebell Sport), and train several days a week with heavy weights. And do a bit of running, cycling, and triathlon for fun now I've rediscovered the joy. I (somewhat lapsed) blog about some of these activities, and various sports nutrition related things, at Deskound Girevik.

C ode is clearly an important part of my life as I develop native mobile apps, APIs, and run servers. I also like to tinker with things like my blog or this website when the mood takes me. Coding is how I earn a living, and sometimes how I relax. When no heavy weights are involved :) I like to read articles on code, but also on being a tech lead, and improving as a person. I love seeing the younger or less experienced people I work with develop and progress. And it's even better when I can learn some things from them.

I t's not all about code though. The internet in general, and social media, are great places to find out information and to interact with people that due to geography you would be unlikely to otherwise meet. I've also met people who have become good friends in real life this way. There is a world of data, knowledge, opinion, and experience out there. That's quite fun!

Other Things

Good Coffee

I'm partial to a good coffee. I don't drink as much as I used to, so prefer to drink good things when I do. I can also be found drinking Zero soft drinks/soda, often with an extra boost. Caffeine and I are good friends!

We used to travel a fair bit, but then life and obligations got in the way. In the last couple of years, we have recently decided to start living more in this regard and making travel something we focus on. In the last couple of years, I've been to several previously unvisited countries (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Russia, Latvia), and taken up Snowboarding. Live life. You never know when you won't be able to anymore...

Back in 2010 I started a daily photo blog (Daily Snap). The online posting of these images tailed off in 2011 for a variety of reasons. But I've pretty much taken a photo every day since then. Several are shared online but many don't see the light of day. It's enough for me to browse on my computer, or to make photo books from.

More About Me

Here are some more things about me...

Technical Skills

Some of the skills I make use of to earn a living. What do you mean? Drinking caffeine and interacting on social media is not a way to earn a living? ;) Note, I do have more technical skills than this, and experience of being a (Tech) Lead. Please, chat to me if you want more detail.
